The Odining: House Cup Edition

The witches and wizards of Hogwarts – uh, Heirs of Asgard – gathered at Texas Renaissance Festival in early November (the 9th-11th) to compete in the clan’s first annual House Cup.

Friday night was eventful, with most of the clan spending the evening at a neighboring camp’s karaoke party, Golden breaking – yes, breaking! – her foot, and Brew Crew debuting their non-alcoholic butterbeer (pro tip: combine it with the lingonberry cider for a tasty alcoholic version!).

Saturday morning, the games began! Students made their way into Faire to see if they could complete a list of epic quests, which included tasks such as defeat a dragon, have tea with a princess, take a flying lesson, and become part of Dumbledore’s Army. Students also had the chance to win individual prizes by “attending classes” at Falcon’s Heath, the Joust, and Closing Ceremony.

Once back in camp, the Headmasters scored everyone’s quest lists. Hufflepuff won the House Cup (!!!), and each team had at least one member who successfully checked off every item on the list, which put them in the running to be their House’s MVP. Ultimately, Ashley (Hufflepuff), PJ (Gryffindor), David (Slytherin), and Sandi (Ravenclaw) walked away with the MVP trophies. Additional honors included Best Photo (Mike, for Defeating a Dragon) and Most Points by an Individual (PJ).

It was a wonderful weekend, and we’d like to give a shout-out to Chef Jenn for coming in on Saturday, despite her illness and the cold, to keep us all fed!

Your Headmasters,
Laura, Lord of Relics &
Trisha, Lady of Goodwill

Aegir’s Ball – we’ve got the biggest!

Aegir’s was such a huge success this year, it is hard to put down in writing all of the fantastic things that happened!  Despite the raining weather, we had our largest turnout ever, and we even had our first ever proposal in camp at our dinner.  Our 7 course awards banquet was fantastic, despite having all burners break down just an hour before dinner time.

Caleb came out for the weekend, and created another awesome photo album with his DSLR here.  We also have tons of photos from the group here.

Congratulations to all of the award winners from last season:

  • MVP – Joe Kaluza
  • Rookie of the Year – Trisha Suhr
  • Guest of Unrivaled Esteem and Suitable Talents – Mark Treat
  • “The Legend” – Cody Cook
  • Service Award – Josh Hart
  • Best Group Photo – Laura Golden
  • Most Awesome Photo – Sandi Gonzalez

And of course, congrats to Nick and Sarah on their engagement, we love you guys!

Captain’s Blog – Beer Fest II: The Drinkining

Huzzah to the courageous Asgardians who braved the weather forecast and joined us for the opening raid of our 2018/2019 season!  Fortunately, there was very little rain and we were able to enjoy great competition as well as the 40 gallons of homebrewed beer and cider provided by the Brew Crew (lead by Peter the High Technomancer)!  You may notice from the pictures the tap wall now includes 8 taps of brew as well as 1 water tap named “Amy’s Good Decisions”.

This was the first event for our new “Odin Chef” competition.  PJ provided bacon pancakes for breakfast and brought food truck style to this festival. He set up two windows and cooked up made to order plates like venison stir-fry, smoked chicken burritos, hot dogs and brats.  Attendees have been sent a scoring survey and I can say it will be tough to beat his strong showing.  Should PJ win the Odin Chef competition, he and his sous chefs will receive prizes next Aegir’s Ball.

This year, 5 teams competed including our neighbors Adrian and Kelly who presented me the Roman Dirk of Friendship 2 years ago.  Thors Hammered (James, Joel, and Ryan) lead the field by 1 point going into group play, but The Beards (Josh K. Josh H. and Adam) overtook them by a point going into the playoffs. After the semi-finals, it was Thors Hammered vs. The Beards competing for the championship.

With the point advantage, The Beards chose beer pong and sent Adam and Klein to the table. Thors Hammered was down a James after he was bedly wounded by one too many ciders. Ryan and Joel were drunk, but still ready to fight to the end. What followed was an epic duel. As drunk as he was, Ryan was sinking shots like a champ,  even fighting back from defeat once with multiple redemption shots.  In the end, The Beard’s won the day to join Into the Freja (Jenn, Trisha, and Golden) as Beer Fest Champions.

This was my second and possibly final Beer Fest to raid lead.  I hope to enjoy Beer Fests solely as a competitor and Captain next year and I’d be happy to help the next Beer Fest RL anyway I can.  Thanks to everyone who participated and I’ll see you at Aegir’s Ball!

Captains Blog – Njords Raid 2018, The First HA Beach Raid

First I want to thank everyone who braved the high winds and warm temperatures to come out to my fishing expedition on June 23rd!  To say that it was a wonderful, memorable time is an understatement.

Golden and I arrived at the rendezvous midafternoon on Friday and after establishing a beachhead, I set out to chase the fish.  Clan members trickled in through the evening, a few fish were caught, and merriment was made. Joe the XO brought the last keg of our spring apple wine, while Sarah Stout brought homemade pulled pork tacos, guac, and pickled cabbage. A big thank you to Sarah!

Friday night, when the moon was high, Matt(The Red Viking) Johnson joined me for a midnight gigging adventure in Christmas Bay.  We returned a with a beautiful 19″ Flounder and 3 giant blue crabs.  The Flounder was cooked up by Momma T for the clan Saturday afternoon.

Saturday kicked off our first Sand Castle Competition and honestly, I was blown away by all the participants! Many of the entries took hours of work by multiple builders and the hard work paid off.  I strongly encourage everyone to view the event photos, because they’re great.  Ultimately, Susie, Joe, and Audrey’s full-sized sleepy dragon took first place. Honorable mentions went out to Golden’s dragon guarded castle, Jenn’s Viking longship, and Amy’s dragon head.

Several members wet their lines on Saturday but the only keepers were caught by Adam and Cody.  Cody caught the largest trout of the weekend at 21 inches, but I had the fortune of hooking up with an absolute monster of the surf while wade fishing on the 3rd sandbar.  Fortunately, the Red Viking was there to hold on to my stringer to keep me from being pulled out to sea when I jumped to say above water.

The fight went on for 35 minutes and took us a mile down the beachfront before we had landed what became known that weekend as Jörmungandr, the Midgard fish. As we left the water with this 44″ Jack Crevalle, a search party lead by Cody pulled up to us to give us a lift back to camp.  In all my years of fishing the gulf surf, I have never landed such a beast and it was truly the greatest gift of the weekend. I like to think our fallen members in Valhalla were with us this day and helped land this fish.

With fish caught and eaten, Sand Castles erected in honor of our clan, and the keg drained, our first beach raid came to a close. I’m honored to have been the first to lead Njord’s Raid and I hope a Raid Leader steps forward to carry on the tradition.

Keep it Loki Weekend April 20th-22nd 2018

Keep it Loki Weekend kept to its’ word with all the festivities being more about our Heirs of Asgard community rather than the jam paced adventures we are all used to. And the Sherwood Forest Faire didn’t disappoint a soul (unless you had flooded tents on that fateful Saturday after faire). But the weekend we centered around three main things: a beautiful pig roast, a make your own “Loki” Divine tasting competition and friendship among old and new faces and clans that all represented the same core values of safe fun, outrageous adventures and the true meaning of brotherhood. The Sherwood Forest Faire was a first for me with its winding trails that I would have absolutely lost myself in, if it hadn’t been for both Adam and Jenn Treadway. The fairgrounds were hillier but was a more intimate setting that was refreshing from the normal commercialism. There was an amazing archery tournament that our own captain, Adam Treadway, competed in that was a sight to behold. It did happen to rain Saturday and flood a few people’s tents, but Asgardians were more than accommodating to those who were in need, and during the course of the night we were able to taste the pig roast that was covered in bacon and barbecue sauce that was delightful as well as have our first make your own “Loki” competition where you made your very own concoction and we to be judged by some of our newer members of HOA. There were ten entries and we even needed a tie breaker who happened to be our lovely council member Laura Golden, who was able to make the final call. Our top three winners were Jenn Treadway with her honey melon potion, Adam Treadway with a cucumber basil that was sipping on a warm spring day, and finally Peter Pinard with his intoxicating batch of horchata, tasting so sweet you couldn’t tell it was 140 proof. HOA did go to different clan areas and the only word to describe this moment and feeling to me was merriment. I was so happy to be co raid leader with Laura and Joe and it meant everything to me. Sherwood is becoming a wonderful new tradition for this group.

Forever a servant for this group,

Michelle Severson

Einherjar Raid – Scarborough 2018 May 25 – May 28

We had a great raid for Scarborough Faire!

Camping at Higview Park on Lake Bardwell gave us some unexpected challenges, from tents needing to be moved for being “on the shoreline” which apparently isn’t allowed, and having to creatively shuffle tents due to a previously-unenforced 2 tents per site rule suddenly being enforced, to the nearest bathrooms having…questionable plumbing.  BUT, despite these minor challenges, FUN PREVAILED!

Friday was arrival day, and camp set up, with a potluck dinner supplemented by a birthday cake for Tricia.  Peter debuted a pavilion with built-in lighting and Joe took advantage of our access to electrical outlets to string fairy lights throughout the kitchen and tap wall pavilions.  Being able to see was super nice.  We had a very nice camp safety meeting with engaging discussion.

‘Twas super warm, so campfires were forgone the entire weekend.  Instead, we sat in ever-changing amoeba formations around empty space.  Fire was not missed.

Saturday breakfast was breakfast tacos, and they were delicious.  This was the main faire day, and I believe everyone enjoyed what I think might actually be my favorite faire.  Matt stayed at camp and earned the title of CrawDaddy by spending the day babysitting our sacrificial crawfish all day, despite his conviction that said mudbugs were already dead.  After a full day of sweating like sumo wrestlers in a hot yoga class, we were all treated to a delicious dinner of beasts felled by the mighty hunter Joe (and probably Adam, too?).  Two of our number went to swim, but changed their minds upon encountering a snake 5 sneks long that was eating a catfish.  Instead they joined the Amoeba of Friendship and new vocabularies were created, Wikipedia articles were edited (ok, ONE Wikipedia article was edited), Spitefund was conceptualized, and birthday cupcakes for Tricia were devoured.  There was some unpleasant excitement when fighting and threats among the people camping across the road led to the discussion in the safety meeting about calling the authorities when appropriate being a discussion about action we wound up needing to take.  Thankfully, things were resolved quickly and peacefully, and I’m pretty sure anonymously.

Our esteemed leader, Captain AT, finally arrived in the wee hours of the morning, after being retrieved by his good woman from the wrong side of the lake, where his Uber chariot deposited him.  He and Matt then decided to do some late-night fishing.  Their plan to pick out some dead crawfish from our bounteous supply was thwarted by the discovery that Matt was sorely mistaken and his carefully tended charges were in fact very much alive.  No fish were caught.

Sunday dawned with the promise of bacon pancakes, and that promise was delivered by Jenn.  The day was a lovely blur of spit-roasted suckling pig, batch after batch of sacrificially boiled crawfish, and cool, refreshing lake swimming.   A few of our number opted to return to the faire.  There was one injury incurred due to the fact that some people in the world still can’t grasp the concept of “Don’t Mess With Texas”, but the members of our clan come prepared.  Some more than others.  Nick and Sarah seemed to have EVERYTHING!

The fishing tournament was looking like it was going to be a toss-up between Adam reeling in a stick, and Laura catching a minnow with her bare hands.  BUT, in the night, as the rest of us passed around a Glow Ball to play Truth or Lie with while adorned with glow jewelry in the Amoeba of Friendship, NICK CAUGHT A REAL FISH!!!  After many people retired for the night, those remaining in the Amoeba passed around the Glow Ball and crafted the Epic of the Goddess Trisha.

Monday morning, pastries were eaten, camp was broken, Nick and Laura were bestowed with their fishing tournament prizes, and we all went our separate ways.  It was a good weekend.

Get Lit(erary)

Luis, Jenn, Mark, Vickie (my roommate), and I volunteered at the 2018 San Antonio Book Festival on Saturday, April 7th. We had signed up to work in the Young Adult area, but when we arrived, they told us that a university had answered a last-minute call for volunteers and while they’d be happy to have us, we ultimately weren’t needed. Undeterred, we marched back to Volunteer Check-In and asked for a new assignment.

Jenn and Vickie were whisked off to run the information booth, where they gave out directions and free books. Mark, Luis, and I were sentenced assigned to the children’s area, where we explained games and helped with crafts.

Before and after our shift, we explored the Book Festival and found Fiesta medals, food trucks, D&D, and even the Sorting Hat! After a misadventure with missing keys, we celebrated the end of a successful raid with dinner and a movie.

Drowning Doesn’t Look Like You Think it Would

At our most recent Sherwood expedition, we had an incident occur that was both unexpected and challenging for us as a group. We wanted to discuss it openly and candidly, but first we needed to fully understand everything that happened and take care of those affected.  As the Elder who was on duty and in charge when it happened, I wanted to personally discuss what happened and the important lessons we need to learn and adapt from.

After drinking excessively, a guest in our camp sexually assaulted another guest in the middle of camp. At another point, the offending guest also assaulted an elder, and threatened to assault the police.  That guest has been banned from the group, and will not return.  There were early warnings leading up to the events that many of us witnessed, and in hindsight, should have been points where we should have intervened.

I will take personal responsibility for not acting sooner, as I believe others who were there will also do.  One of the most important lessons that I learned is that, much like drowning, assault may not look anything like what you expect.  You may expect a victim to scream, get angry, or call out for help, but often that’s the last things they will do, especially if they know the person.  Instead we saw that the victim nervously laugh and say things like “hey, what are you doing?” and “How about we don’t?”, trying desperately to peacefully de-escalate the situation — hoping to avoid a big scene. I was fully sober at the time, saw many of the events occur, and yet realized nothing about what was occurring just a few feet from me.  I say this to point out how vigilant we all need to be.

Their calls went unanswered longer than they should, because 1) we didn’t know what to look for, and 2) we weren’t vigilant and communicative as a group.  There was very little communication between members and elders about what had happened. We were also more afraid to engage the police than we should have been, when they could have intervened to help as people who are trained in de-escalation and have the power to resolve conflicts.  We came away with a few important lessons:

  • We all need to be vigilant about people getting too drunk/incapacitated.  If you see it happening, don’t be afraid to suggest to someone that they drink water, slow down, or stop drinking.  If it begins to turn into a conflict, don’t engage, grab an elder.
  • If someone asks you to slow down or stop drinking, don’t get angry, take their message to heart.
  • If you see anything suspicious, don’t be afraid to eavesdrop and inject yourself (it’s Our camp).  We can all work together to de-escalate.  If anything seems worrying, let an elder know right away.
  • If elders aren’t available, or there is any sort of immediate threat, don’t be afraid to engage the police/security.  That is what they are there for.
  • We should all be able to work together to maintain a safe camp, and safety is of utmost importance to us.  We will begin introducing a series of specific safety measures at future events to help with this, including a Friday night safety meeting.

Together we are tanks,

XO

Idunn’s Festival

This weekend we had a wonderful time at Sherwood Forest Faire celebrating Idunn’s spring festival! Peter spearheaded the raid.

Joe and Peter built us our new tap wall, boasting six taps as well as brought the mead and cider brewed weeks before.

(Click forfull album)

Overall, it was a success. We came away from the event lighter on alcohol, but richer in friends. As it should be.

Our next raid is planned for March 23rd – Baldur’s Bangarang!

The Cider Clan Rules

The Booze committee got together to taste our first batches and brew our second ones, and boy did they turn out fantastic!

Up next: a 6 tap wall for opening weekend of Sherwood, come try the new flavors!
