COVID and The lost Eons

Hey everyone, your friendly neighborhood Sherwood Thane here to restart everything on the blog and absolve everyone previous who hasn’t done their blog posts, on the account of COVID hitting and everything getting weird. We haven’t gone anywhere, in fact, we are bigger and better than ever.

In the last year and change, a lot of crazy things happened. Sherwood 2020 was cancelled after just 3 weekends, and we spent a year figuring out how to do everything we do safely, and still enjoy each other’s time. We sent skeleton crews out for a few weekends at TRF, and went into Sherwood 2021 expecting a small, uncertain season. BOY, were we wrong! At Sherwood, we had 39 Friends of Faire members, and record attendance nearly every week (we broke our previous all-time attendance record 4 out of 8 weekends!).

We’ve had lots of growth struggles to manage all of the new membership, new process, and much bigger expectations around food, beverages, and all general logistics. But we’ve done pretty tremendously in the process at building out our new land, rituals, and events to new uncharted places. Come join us at TRF this year for our 10 year anniversary there, can’t wait to see ya!

New Land at Celtic Fest

Hey guys, I wanted to share a post about the amazingness that happened for us at Sherwood – we are official owners of permanent clan camping at Sherwood Forest Festival! We got to start clearing and moving in at Celtic Music fest, and boy was it a hot one. A brave team of a dozen or so adventurers joined us with chainsaws and implements of destruction to clear the underbrush, and pave the way for next year. Here’s the photo gallery of our gorgeous land claim.

Sure Would!

Hey all, sorry for the long delay before posting. Sure Would and the Not So Highland Games went off without a hitch! We raised over $400 for RESCU, and people had a blast playing all of the games.

Our beer fest winners, team Enter the Freya, reprised their win with a very solid carry from MVP/individual winner Jenn Treadway. Jenn won best in night in 3/4 of her events, for a total individual score of 27 points, and they totalled 52 points as a team. Stormcrow won second at 37 points, winning the team tug o war overall for 15 of those points. Ray from Stormcrow took second place individual at 17 total points, but he was not on the Stormcrow team, he played as an individual.

Next year, Sure Would will be our family friendly weekend, with round two of the Not so Highland Games! Here is the link to the photo album.

Jotunheim – Getting ready for Sherwood

Heirs of Asgard couldn’t be more excited for the start of Sherwood season, and we are proud to announce two big things:

  1. We helped with the festivities by donating free homebrew tasting to the cause, served at our camp on the January “Hosted by YOU” weekend, and at Jacob’s Well on Friday of the February move in weekend.
  2. Our tap wall is a little bigger….we now go up to 11!  That’s right, 11 tasty brews, with 4 permanent ciders, 4 permanent beers, and 3 rotating taps of fun.

We are really excited about becoming a part of the Sherwood culture!  Here is the photo gallery for the gathering weekends.

Aegir’s Ball – we’ve got the biggest!

Aegir’s was such a huge success this year, it is hard to put down in writing all of the fantastic things that happened!  Despite the raining weather, we had our largest turnout ever, and we even had our first ever proposal in camp at our dinner.  Our 7 course awards banquet was fantastic, despite having all burners break down just an hour before dinner time.

Caleb came out for the weekend, and created another awesome photo album with his DSLR here.  We also have tons of photos from the group here.

Congratulations to all of the award winners from last season:

  • MVP – Joe Kaluza
  • Rookie of the Year – Trisha Suhr
  • Guest of Unrivaled Esteem and Suitable Talents – Mark Treat
  • “The Legend” – Cody Cook
  • Service Award – Josh Hart
  • Best Group Photo – Laura Golden
  • Most Awesome Photo – Sandi Gonzalez

And of course, congrats to Nick and Sarah on their engagement, we love you guys!

Drowning Doesn’t Look Like You Think it Would

At our most recent Sherwood expedition, we had an incident occur that was both unexpected and challenging for us as a group. We wanted to discuss it openly and candidly, but first we needed to fully understand everything that happened and take care of those affected.  As the Elder who was on duty and in charge when it happened, I wanted to personally discuss what happened and the important lessons we need to learn and adapt from.

After drinking excessively, a guest in our camp sexually assaulted another guest in the middle of camp. At another point, the offending guest also assaulted an elder, and threatened to assault the police.  That guest has been banned from the group, and will not return.  There were early warnings leading up to the events that many of us witnessed, and in hindsight, should have been points where we should have intervened.

I will take personal responsibility for not acting sooner, as I believe others who were there will also do.  One of the most important lessons that I learned is that, much like drowning, assault may not look anything like what you expect.  You may expect a victim to scream, get angry, or call out for help, but often that’s the last things they will do, especially if they know the person.  Instead we saw that the victim nervously laugh and say things like “hey, what are you doing?” and “How about we don’t?”, trying desperately to peacefully de-escalate the situation — hoping to avoid a big scene. I was fully sober at the time, saw many of the events occur, and yet realized nothing about what was occurring just a few feet from me.  I say this to point out how vigilant we all need to be.

Their calls went unanswered longer than they should, because 1) we didn’t know what to look for, and 2) we weren’t vigilant and communicative as a group.  There was very little communication between members and elders about what had happened. We were also more afraid to engage the police than we should have been, when they could have intervened to help as people who are trained in de-escalation and have the power to resolve conflicts.  We came away with a few important lessons:

  • We all need to be vigilant about people getting too drunk/incapacitated.  If you see it happening, don’t be afraid to suggest to someone that they drink water, slow down, or stop drinking.  If it begins to turn into a conflict, don’t engage, grab an elder.
  • If someone asks you to slow down or stop drinking, don’t get angry, take their message to heart.
  • If you see anything suspicious, don’t be afraid to eavesdrop and inject yourself (it’s Our camp).  We can all work together to de-escalate.  If anything seems worrying, let an elder know right away.
  • If elders aren’t available, or there is any sort of immediate threat, don’t be afraid to engage the police/security.  That is what they are there for.
  • We should all be able to work together to maintain a safe camp, and safety is of utmost importance to us.  We will begin introducing a series of specific safety measures at future events to help with this, including a Friday night safety meeting.

Together we are tanks,

XO

The Cider Clan Rules

The Booze committee got together to taste our first batches and brew our second ones, and boy did they turn out fantastic!
